Because the Earth’s tides are ultimately due to gravitational interaction with the Moon and Sun and the Earth’s rotation, tidal power is inexhaustible and classified as a renewable energy resource.  

The Climate Change Convention has demonstrated that global emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere continue to rise at about +3% p.a. and show little sign of diminishing. However there is general agreement that what is required are emissions reductions of increasing severity starting as soon as possible. To achieve this, all countries need urgently to take action to harness all possible renewable energy sources. The purpose of this note is to point out this urgency and to commend the harnessing of the Tides around the country as an available and effective source of Renewable Energy for the UK that could more than meet our power demands. Also, as there is a time difference between the tides in North Wales and that of South Wales, east and west coasts, and these tide times are well known as is the tide heights, so the available power is known and regular (unlike wind).

I gyflawni hyn, mae angen i bob gwlad weithredu ar frys i harneisio’r holl ffynonellau ynni adnewyddadwy posibl. Pwrpas y nodyn hwn yw tynnu sylw at y brys hwn a chanmol harneisio’r llanwau o amgylch y wlad fel ffynhonnell Ynni Adnewyddadwy sydd ar gael ac yn effeithiol ar gyfer y DU a allai fwy na bodloni ein gofynion pŵer. Hefyd, gan fod gwahaniaeth amser rhwng y llanwau yng Ngogledd Cymru ac yn Ne Cymru, arfordiroedd dwyreiniol a gorllewinol, ac mae’r amseroedd llanw hyn yn hysbys yn ogystal â’r uchderau llanw, felly mae’r pŵer sydd ar gael yn hysbys ac yn rheolaidd (yn wahanol i’r gwynt).
