The Unit

The unit is simply a two hulled boat with a paddle wheel in between the hulls. Anchored at the front and rear of each hull the unit is held securely on location in line with the current flow. As the water passes under the unit it turns the wheel and this in turn turns a generator. In this regard it is the same as wind power. The hulls have a platform around them with hand rails. The hulls have flat sides to make it easy to come along side and walk around, the spinning wheel is enclosed for safety, and the front and rear has a grid to prevent floating debris damaging the wheel All units will be designed and build to Marine Lloyds Standards.

 The big point is we can do this all around our coastline – every tidal estuary and large river can have one or several ‘clusters’ of units installed. The units singly or collectively bring the power ashore via a power cable to houses or farms around our coastal towns, and shoreline properties with a grid connection. The existing road and rail bridges bridges over rivers like the Humber, Forth and other estuary bridges make an easy shore connection.

 On shore the power is converted by standard inverters, same as in wind power, to match the grid requirements prior to export to the grid. Thus, all the complex electronics are ashore leaving the robust boat and water wheel to endure life in the costal environmental. The unit is fully enclosed. and can be painted red and green and used as marker buoys identifying the shipping channels.

They could also be arranged as pontoons for yachts and other recreational craft to tie up, thus providing extra berthing facilities.  

Our existing offshore wind turbines cables could be shared to bring the generated power ashore, thus reducing infrastructure costs.
